He took Philip Marlowe and added a layer of psychosocial depth. Macdonald said Chandler was one of his (other) main inspirations. Many critics identify M acdonald as the literary heir of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, as the writer who polished and redefined the classic detective hero.
